Your task on Day 16 of the 28 Days of Abundant Practice Challenge is to learn how to habit stack.

A Mother of Abundance has healthy habits that have been learned and maintained over time.  A great way to embed new healthy habits is to stack your new ones on top of your current ones.  This is called habit stacking and is a must-have in your success tool-box.

This method has been scientifically proven to help people maintain the new habits they’re trying to keep.  It works on a very simple principle:  Use a current habit to trigger the new one you’re trying to create.

For example, if you know you’re trying to floss more often, put the floss right next to your toothpaste as a trigger to floss when you brush your teeth.  If you want to drink more water, put some water next to your bed and don’t get out of the bed until you’ve drunk the water first.  The current habit (getting out of bed each morning)  triggers the new habit.

You want to eat more fruit and you’re normally hungry at 11am?  Replace your normal snacks with fruit and let your 11 am hunger pang trigger you to eat the fruit – simple!!

An ambitious mother can use this skill in both her personal and professional life.

As with most things you want to achieve in life, planning is vital to your success.  So, plan how you’re going to stack your new habit onto your current ones before you start.

Here’s James Clear’s book Atomic Habits,* which is referred to in this video.  Take a look for more information and use it to plan ahead.  The book Habit Stacking by S J Scott* is also a good reference.

Want to get up on time or even earlier?  Try this tip:  When your alarm goes off, you must sit up in bed, turn, put your feet on the floor and stand up before you switch your alarm off.  For this to work, you have to commit to this in advance.  There’s no point in trying to rely on your half asleep self to figure this out without much planning beforehand.

Do you have any habit you could stack for success?  Are you stacking them already? I’d love to hear from you below.
