Hello, and welcome to Mother of Abundance – the place where ambitious, caring mothers find information on how to live your best life. So whether you’re a mother who’s growing a business, climbing the corporate ladder, studying for a qualification, or an at-home mother, while striving to be the best you can be, you’re in the right place. I’m your host, Xina Gooding Broderick.

Hello and welcome. Welcome to Season 3 Episode 3. How are you doing? Are you well? Are you happy? I’m telling you this last week has been testing.

My son went back to school for all of a week. Then his COVID bubble burst in his class. Then he had to be home. When he went back to school, I thought, “Great! I can catch up on all the things that I’ve got to do. That’s absolutely fantastic!” And he was at school for five days. And then his bubble burst.

And we were really looking forward to him being able to spend his birthday with his school friends. Unfortunately, he had to be at home, back at home again, on his birthday. So I had to run around and make a birthday cake.

By the way, I made him some fantastic birthday cake. Let me know if you want the recipe for the vegan chocolate cake that I made because it was fantastic. In fact, I’ll put it in the show notes for you guys. So you can have a little look and perhaps a little taste of your own cake. And if you make it and it turns, let me know how it turns out. If you make it, please, make it, put a picture on socials, tag me in the picture. Because whether I’m eating the chocolate cake or looking at the chocolate cake, I’m happy.

Okay, so we managed to make his birthday work really well. We got him the cake. He was able to play with his friends over Zoom. He had a great time. He was happy he got the present he wanted, which was a Spider-Man with bendy toes. A Spider-Man with bendy toes, you know, the child was talking about it for the longest time. So you know I had to get him this Spider-Man with bendy toes. And what else did he want?

He wanted Animal Crossing. So the family, when it comes to, you know, quite what I consider to be pricey toys or games or whatever, I let him know he’s not likely to be getting more than one. Well, he got Spider-Man with the bendy toes, because that was what I considered to be a reasonable price for a toy. And then he got the Animal Crossing game, which he really liked. And I told him that as a family we’re going to chip in and get that for him. So that was the result.

But, my goodness, trying to juggle with everything else, I actually started struggling with the juggling. And had to just step back, and breathe. And remind myself, I work for myself. I work for myself. And I’m a good boss. So you might have noticed that a podcast episode didn’t go out, last Monday. I apologize for that. But that’s why I wasn’t able to hardly do anything. So I thought, I’m just gonna have to do what I can do. And I’m still working through my master’s. Still working through my masters. I don’t know if…I have to fight sometimes with getting the motivation. But you know what, I keep going.

And do you know why I keep going? Because my why is massive. My why is HUGE, huge. It’s big, big, big, big, big. And I think about my why all the time. So let’s just step back and talk about that for a moment.

What Is Your “Why”?

Have you ever reached a point in your life where you ask yourself, why you’re here? What your purpose is? What your life is for? Or maybe you feel stuck in your career or your life in general or you feel like you have no momentum or zeal anymore for the things that you used to do Well, this might be because you haven’t found your why. I’m not talking about the 25th letter in the alphabet.

When I’m talking about your why, I’m talking about a statement of purpose that describes why you do the work you do and why you live the lifestyle you live. It’s a calling, conviction, mission statement, a vision of your life and work, your core source of motivation. It’s like a reference point for all your decisions and actions and it defines who you are and what makes you productive. It’s the reason for your life’s work.

Benefits of Finding Your Why

There are huge, huge benefits of finding your why. And the main one is it provides you with clarity. So that whole confusion or question asking that you might find yourself doing if you know your why, you have clarity and the question kind of, of why you even exist, tends to dissipate and go away. Another benefit is that infuses you with a passion for your goals because you’ve got focus now. You know why you’re doing the things that you do.

It keeps you focused on your goals. It helps you to live healthier and longer. It helps you to develop resilience, because if you’ve got a big why, there’s nothing that’s gonna stop you from getting there. It allows you to live a life with integrity because you know what you’re doing, you know what you’re about and you know why you’re doing those things.

How To Find Your “Why”

So if you don’t know what your why is, there are a few ways that you can do it. And here are some questions that you can ask yourself. You can ask yourself:

  • What makes you come alive?
  • What are your innate strengths?
  • Where do you add the greatest value?
  • How will you measure your life?

Like me, I know, that love makes me come alive. Love of my family, love of the work that I do, and helping people to love what they do, too. That is my thing. What is my innate strength? I can tell you that I’m an effective communicator. I’m an effective communicator. And I love sharing information. So if you’ve got one of those friends who shares links that are useful, that’s me. That’s, I’m the one. I will find out what you like and when I come across a link with more information about that thing, I will remember that you like that and I will share it with you. And that is one of my innate strengths. So I’m an effective communicator. I remember what are the things that people like. And I love sharing with people on their terms.

Where do you add the greatest value? So for me adding the greatest value is offering my love of love from one to many. I’m on a mission. I’m on a mission to spread the love on a massive level. So I need to do that one to many. And that’s why I do my podcast, that’s why I’ve got the Facebook group.

And one of the last questions that you can ask yourself is how will you measure your life? How will you measure your life? One of the ways I measure my life is how much laughter we have. And that doesn’t mean that we’re pretending there’s nothing wrong. Let’s face it, open your eyes, look at what’s going on in the world. It’s a pretty challenging time right now for most of us. No, I don’t mean we don’t have challenges but we have a lot of laughter in my home. And that’s one of the ways that I measure my life.

When I come to the end of my days, I want my whole love vessel to be empty. I am pouring it all out right now. I’m not waiting. I’m pouring my love and my joy and my laughter out on everything and into every day. And I do not do this by denying my emotions. If I’m upset about something, those who are closest to me, they are going to know.

But I try and get rid of that negative emotion. I feel it, you know. I acknowledge it but I don’t let it run away with me. But for me, the big thing is when I’m old, I want to know that I loved out my last drop of love. I’m going to continue until my very last breath – loving and giving love and receiving love and joy and laughter. That’s how I’m going to be measuring my life, definitely. And I’m clear about that.

It could be that you’re supposed to be a gardener or, you know, who knows. But without your why, you might find that you’re actually not on the path that you truly, truly want because you’ve not taken out the time to sit down and think about it.
